The Battle of Castillon (17 July 1453) was the final battle in the Hundred Years’ War. The triumphant French victory led to the loss of the last English holdings in France, as well as political turmoil and eventual civil war in England.
All of this, however, came after the French just barely escaped total destruction — at one point even their king had been captured and hauled back to London as prisoner.
This painting captures the turning tide of fortune: the fateful moment the English commander falls, and the French garrison rallies onwards to victory. But more importantly, it reminds you what is possible when you choose to keep fighting and never give up — had the French given in when all seemed lost, they never would have accomplished this spectacular victory.
