The Damsel of the Sanct Grael

Spiritual symbolism abounds in this Pre-Raphaelite masterpiece.

Here the Holy Grail stands for divine grace and the spiritual quest for enlightenment, while the dove represents the presence of the Holy Spirit and the interconnected nature of the divine and earthly realms.

Additionally, the positioning of the damsel’s fingers echo the gesture Christ makes in the Christ Pantocrator icon of Mount Sinai. In that icon, Jesus makes a blessing with his right hand — his thumb, ring finger, and little finger touch, while the index and middle fingers are extended.

Rossetti’s inclusion of a similar gesture highlights the connection between the divine grace represented by the Holy Grail and the damsel — perhaps suggesting that beauty (here personified) is the intermediary between the human and the divine.
